The Unveiling
By Patty |
It finally happened…I received the painting that my friend Dylan, the artist, finished for me. To commemorate this day, I had an unveiling party last Saturday night. I invited my eclectic group of friends to honor this piece.
The evening started at 8pm. I served finger foods and had a chocolate fountain for people to dip fresh fruit (this is a must for creating a mood to any evening…definitely worth renting or buying…thanks Amir
).
As people mingled, there was a buzz about the painting…what was hidden behind the white sheet. At 10pm I had the unveiling. I stood in front of it spoke of the inspiration that brought the piece to life.
The story started just before summer. I stood in the middle of my loft and looked around. I sensed I needed a painting to show this next transition of my life. This leads me to letting you know about all the paintings in my home and how they were carefully chosen.
Let’s start with my Indian/Buddha face. She came to life when I was in my predator mode, busy finishing my book, opening a studio, traveling and having several men in my entourage. She gave me strength every time I walked into my home. Her eyes, her smile and her light allowed me to focus on my purpose. Yet, she soothed me at the same time…gave me a sense of comfort when there was discomfort.
There came a moment when I got tired of working hard and going from man to man. I asked my spiritual teacher Lisa for her guidance. She blurts out…Feng Shui! She suggested to visit my home and feel the vibe. The moment she came over she noticed the beautiful colors but more importantly the paintings and the statues. She looked at me and said, “You have no room for a man.” I couldn’t understand how she came to that conclusion. She continued to explain. “Your home is surrounded with women. You have a warrior woman, an Indian/Buddha woman, an Egyptian goddess and an African dancer spread out in every room. I stood there paralyzed at the simplicity yet truthful evaluation she made.
My eyes met hers and she saw how I longed for a solution. “What you must do is invite more men into your home””…like I wasn’t already doing that..;-)…”meaning you need paintings and sculptures of couples showing the union of man and woman.” She added more, “Leave a drawer empty and some space in your closet. Let the universe know you are creating room for someone special to come into you life.”
At this point I knew I was moving in a few months and my goal was to purge and start fresh in my new home. So I planned and prepared. I ordered not 1 but 2 Kama Sutra, sensual-style prints of a couple embraced in a Love Ritual. I asked my friend Martin that was practicing his painting skills to make me a painting of a couple that is embraced.
About 1 year after I moved, I made a request to my friends to introduce me to a painter that would agree to make a canvas just a big as my Buddha that portrayed the essential connection between man and woman…and that’s when Dylan showed up.
So, I stood in front of my friends on Saturday taking the time to be grateful to everyone that crossed my path and specifically Dylan who took to heart all of our conversations to create a piece that was more than just a union of a man and woman…it was a celebration of the woman I’ve become.
Just before my boyfriend and I unveiled the painting, I made 1 request…everyone needed to write down on papers I distributed, the words that came to mind when they looked at the piece.
Here are some of those words and phrases: romance, rose petals that are whimsical giving a dream-like state the woman is in, there was control from the woman yet tender, very sensual, extremely strong communion between 2 people, desire and love in the air, passion for men, comfort for women, energy, one, scrumptious, yes but no, fantasy, final union.
After we toasted, everyone took a moment to talk to the artist about his journey through creating this painting. Why he chose what he did?
Gratitude filled my heart because I’ve allowed many art forms to be an important part of my life. Dance, music, paintings all stem from inspiration which is usually attracted to either pain or pleasure. And the driving force behind these emotions create magic. When we take moments to be in our senses, to touch, taste, smell, see and hear what surrounds us, we are being a more sensual person.
Look at your home and feel it’s vibration. How do you feel when you stand in the middle of your surroundings? Take words that express what you are sensing. If you don’t know, ask a friend to tell you their impression (as I did) and it may shed new light and inspiration for you. Go out and look for how you want to feel in your home.
We are all trying to weave through the complexity of our lives…perhaps that is part of the problem; however, this is precisely why we need to create pauses (commercial breaks) that allows us to indulge in the senses…to remind us that we are emotional beings with cravings, desires, vulnerabilities and art is one way of getting the permission to indulge.
